Carlos Slim Helu (born January 28, 1940) is a Mexican business magnate, investor, and philanthropist. From 2010 to 2013, Slim was ranked as the richest person in the world by Forbes business magazine. He made his fortune from his large holdings in a considerable number of Mexican companies through his conglomerate, Grupo Carso. In November 2022, Bloomberg Billionaires Index ranked him as the 11th richest person in the world with a net worth of $78 billion, making him the richest person in Latin America.
Slim’s business conglomerate spans many sectors of the Mexican economy, including education, healthcare, industrial manufacturing, transportation, real estate, media, energy, hospitality, entertainment, high technology, retail, sports and financial services. He accounts for 40% of listings on the Mexican Stock Exchange, while his net worth is equivalent to around 6% of Mexico’s gross domestic product. Since 2016, he has been the largest single shareholder of The New York Times Company.
Slim was born in Mexico City to Julián Slim Haddad and Linda Helú Atta, both Maronite Christians from Lebanon. He decided at a young age that he wanted to be a businessman and received business lessons from his father, who taught him finance, management and accounting, teaching him how to analyze, interpret and read financial statements as well as the importance of keeping accurate financial records.
Carlos Slim was married to Soumaya Domit from 1967 until his death in 1999. Among his interests were various philanthropic projects. Slim has six children: Carlos, Marco Antonio, Patrick, Soumaya, Vanessa and Johanna. His three eldest sons hold key positions in the companies controlled by Slim, where most are involved in the day-to-day running of Slim’s business empire. Slim underwent heart surgery in 1999. In high school, Slim’s favorite subjects were history, cosmography, and math. Slim and his wife had a very happy marriage and he has indicated that he has no intention of remarrying.
In his office, Slim doesn’t have a computer and instead keeps all of his financial data in handwritten notebooks. Due to the vast size of his business empire, he often jokes that he can’t keep up with every business he runs. Slim is a Maronite Catholic and he is one of the main supporters of the Legion of Christ, a Roman Catholic religious institute.
